The idea behind AMIK

Infections are a global problem, which has not dramatically improved despite various methods of treatment and newly developed drugs (especially antibiotics).

Hospital - place for microbe transmission

Particularly micro-organism infections that are directly connected to a hospital stay can arise as a result of cross-contamination - whereby not only the elderly or immunologically compromised patients are affected by these nosocomial infections. According to an estimate by the European Science Foundation (ESF), the mortality from a total of 1.75 million nosocomial infections is 175,000 patients per year. According to the WHO, it should be possible to eliminate up to 50% of these infections which are caused by carelessness when dealing with hygiene

In addition to the increased risk of infection in the medical field, it should also be remembered that hygiene is also very important in the food and pharmaceutical industry.

What is the significance of hygiene at all? Why is hygiene so important?

In the narrower sense, hygiene is the sum of measures taken to prevent infectious diseases. These are connected in particular with cleaning, disinfection and sterilization.

In our everyday language, hygiene is also mistakenly used in place of "cleanliness".

What is meant by anti-microbial?

Anti-microbial refers to surfaces that have an antiseptic coating using nanoscale active substances, which kill germs effectively, exert an inhibitory effect towards microbial colonisation and prevent bacteria from causing dangerous diseases.
Whereas antibacterial agents exclusively combat bacteria, anti-microbial substances act on a variety of different parasites, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae and much more besides.

In the case of anti-microbial surfaces, their effect is only limited to the material surface. However, anti-microbial surfaces can provide a useful service within the scope of infection prophylaxis, as the transfer and carryover of germs, for example, on the clothing of hospital staff, can be minimized.

47% of patients interviewed in a German study are concerned about the risks of bacteria in healthcare facilities. They would feel more secure if clinics were already designed to reduce the growth and spread of bacteria and other pathogens when being designed and equipped. Most people would find a more desirable improvement if fixed equipment such as flooring, wall panels, cupboard and door handles and furniture also provided an integrated antibacterial protection.

Anti-microbial materials are now used in many hygiene-relevant areas of life:
Specialty coatings in refrigerators, germ-reducing surgical drapes or anti-microbial surfaces in the food industry are just only a few examples.
